Economic Influence of Boston, Massachusetts

The largest city in Massachusetts, Boston is the capitol of the state as well as its economic and cultural hub. Rich in history, it is was, until the 1760s, the largest city in America.

Today, Boston is home to many business and commercial enterprises. Although the industry mix has changed for Boston, it still remains an important and influential economic force in the American economy.

Wool, clothing and leather goods were the primary manufacturing industries of the early years of the city’s history, and shoe and textile industries still exist today.
But like most American cities, Boston’s economy has shifted from manufacturing to service and technology.

Boston is America’s oldest continuously operating port. The docks and wharves lining the shores of Boston’s inner harbor are operated by the Massachusetts Port Authority. Shipping concerns, cruise lines and fishing boats contribute to Boston’s thriving shipping industry.

Boston is one of the ten most-visited cities in the United States. There are sixty-two major historic sites in the city, attracting over 15 million visitors each year. Its riverfront location and numerous museums, galleries and performing arts venues draw tourists from across the country. Visitors to the many restaurants, hotels and other hospitality related businesses contribute significantly to Boston’s economy.

Boston is home to several major sports teams. Basketball, baseball and hockey attract loyal local fans. Athletics are popular in the he schools and colleges in the area; the Charles River is famous for its crew teams and rowing events. Local rowing groups are plying the waters, too, and the sport is becoming popular with residents and tourists alike.

Boston is home to a wide variety of industries. Its place in American history is secure, and its contribution to its future is certain.
